Georgia WR Mitchell out for season
Malcolm Mitchell, Georgia's top receiver last season, will be out for the rest of this season after injuring the anterior-cruciate ligament in his right knee while celebrating the Bulldogs' first touchdown against Clemson on Saturday.
Bulldogs coach Mark Richt made the announcement on Sunday night that Mitchell will not play again this season. Mitchell will undergo surgery, and Richt expects that he will be granted a medical redshirt.
Mitchell led Georgia with 40 catches for 572 yards and four touchdowns last season, but he had not caught any passes this season when he was injured while celebrating teammate Todd Gurley's 75-yard touchdown run.
Mitchell seemed to land awkwardly when he leaped to celebrate the score.
"[Mitchell] actually hurt it in the exuberance of the first touchdown of the game for us when he went to congratulate his teammate," Richt said, according to ESPN.com. "I think he jumped up and chest bumped or whatever, and he landed in a bad way and that's when he knew something had happened."
Test Sunday revealed the extent of Mitchell's injury.
Gurley also injured himself on the play and missed the next 11:14 with a strained quadriceps before returning.
Georgia lost to Clemson 38-35.
