Georgetown F Whittington dismissed from team

Georgetown junior forward Greg Whittington was dismissed from the team, coach John Thompson III announced Saturday.

It is not clear why Whittington was kicked off the team but he has had academic problems in the past and is recovering from knee surgery.

Whittington averaged 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds in 13 games last season before getting suspended for academic deficiencies.

He was considered ahead of schedule in rehabbing from a torn ACL during the summer but it was not clear if he would be able to play this season.

Whittington was expected to be the Hoyas' top player this season before the injury and with forward Otto Porter going to the NBA.

It is not known if Whittington will transfer to another school or try to play professionally.

Without Whittington, the Hoyas are 3-2 this season with guards D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Markel Starks combining for more than 35 points per game. Also, UCLA transfer Josh Smith, a 6-foot-8 forward, is averaging 14 points per game.
