Is it finally Etem's time?

Ryan Dadoun looks at Etem and more in this week's Waiver Wired

Corey Abbott recommended Anders Lee in last week's Waiver Wired and he has since gone from being owned in 13% of Yahoo leagues to 43%. Lee has seen a huge boost in production since being put on the first line with John Tavares and Josh Bailey. He'll likely lose that spot once Kyle Okposo comes back, but that won't happen for at least a couple more weeks, so if Lee is still a free agent in your league, pick him up.

Emerson Etem (ANA) - LW/RW - Owned in 0% of Yahoo leagues

Etem has a lot of upside, but you wouldn't know that from looking at his NHL numbers. Playing with the Anaheim Ducks for parts of three seasons, he has just 12 goals and 25 points in 96 games. At the same time, he has averaged around a point-per-game at the AHL level over the last two campaigns and is still just 22 years old. Picking up Etem right now is a leap of faith, but he's an interesting gamble after coach Bruce Boudreau attempted (successfully) to revitalize his team by breaking up Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. That completely changed the dynamic of the top-six and most notably resulted in Etem logging minutes with Ryan Kesler and Corey Perry. Getzlaf and Perry might not stay separated for long and even if they do, Etem might not stick around on that line. However, when you combine Etem's potential with this opportunity, he becomes a player you'll want to keep a very close eye on in the coming days.

Milan Michalek (OTT) - LW/RW - Owned in 8% of Yahoo leagues

Michalek struggled mightily in 2013-14 and hasn't been particularly good this season either, but that's changed lately. He seems to have found his game under new coach Dave Cameron, scoring eight goals and 15 points in 20 contests since the start of January. Michalek has only been picking up steam lately too with four goals and eight points in his last eight games. He's capable of finishing the season on a high note and providing a late season boost to fantasy owners in the process. So far he's largely flown under the radar, but assuming he keeps this up, that will change quickly.

Nail Yakupov (EDM) - RW - Owned in 31% of Yahoo leagues

If you follow my Tuesday column, then you already know that I consider Yakupov to be one of the most intriguing breakout candidates for the 2015-16 campaign. I don't need to sell you on his potential - the fact that he's a former first overall pick speaks to that enough - but there are a great many that doubt his ability to ever live up to that promise. He certainly struggled during his sophomore campaign and he wasn't great offensively out of the gate in 2014-15 either. However, he's been unlucky offensively based on his PDO and on top of that, he's responded well to new coach Todd Nelson. It seems that a combination of a new bench boss and time to mature is what he needed to make the adjustment to the NHL. I think we're going to see him take a step up next season as a result, but he's also not a bad gamble for the rest of this campaign. After all, he's been great lately with four goals and nine points in his last 11 games.

Tyler Myers (WPG) - D - Owned in 33% of Yahoo leagues

Although they play vastly different roles, it seems like there might be parallels between Tyler Myers and Steve Mason. Both burst onto the scene with Calder Trophy-winning campaigns only to see their performance decline in subsequent seasons. Their struggles snowballed while members of chronically bad squads despite their potential until finally they were both traded to franchises that were, at least at the time of the move, in a better position. Mason embraced the change of scenery and Myers seems to as well with a goal and five points in five games since moving to Winnipeg. Myers has the potential to be an offensive leader as well as defensive force and now that he has been given a fresh start and moved away from by far the league's worst offensive team, we're seeing renewed evidence of that.

Frans Nielsen (NYI) - C - Owned in 24% of Yahoo leagues

Nielsen has been a great secondary scorer with the Islanders for years, but lately he's been providing the team with a bit more. He's scored two goals and nine points in his last nine contests and has enjoyed a four-game point streak over that span. If you're inclined to make short-term additions, Nielsen is worth gambling on while he's hot, especially seeing as the Islanders are set to play against Arizona, Calgary, and Carolina next week. Two of those teams are near the bottom of the league's standings and while the Flames are having a decent season, they've been a middle-of-the-road team when it comes to goals allowed.

Brendan Gallagher (MON) - RW - Owned in 30% of Yahoo leagues

Gallagher isn't a guy that stands out because he's been hot, but rather because he's been consistently solid. His three goals and seven points in 11 February games are mostly in line with the types of numbers he's been putting up all season, but he has the potential to do a bit better as Montreal fights for the Atlantic Division title. Gallagher, in his third NHL season is still progressing, playing for one of the best squads in the league, and getting minutes on Montreal's first line as well as its top power-play unit. So while Gallagher isn't the most exciting option out there, for those that appreciate safe additions over gambles, Gallagher is a great guy to look at as an injury replacement or as a substitute for a slumping forward.

Mikko Koivu (MIN) - C - Owned in 47% of Yahoo leagues

Koivu got off to a terrible start this season with two goals and no assists in nine October games, but he's improved every month since then. It's gotten to the point where he's netted two goals and recorded nine assists in 10 contests in February. Given how effective the Wild have been as a team lately combined with the fact that they're still in desperation mode down the stretch, it's not hard to envision Koivu staying strong for the remainder of the season. He's already owned in almost half of Yahoo leagues, so he's obviously not going to be an option for a lot of readers, but those that can pick him up should give serious consideration to doing so.

Erik Cole (DAL) - LW/RW - 7% of Yahoo leagues

I need to start this out by acknowledging one of my colleagues, Kevin Brown, who actually brought up Cole in our roundtable on the Season Pass side of the site (which you really should check out when it's published if you have the option because I think it's a good one). This Waiver Wired is going to end up getting published first, so if you read these chronically, it will look like I beat Kevin to the punch, when in truth, he actually was talking about Cole before me. I couldn't resist putting Cole on this list though because he really deserves to be owned in far more than 7% of Yahoo leagues. The fact that he has 11 goals and 18 points in 19 games since the start of 2015 is justification enough to give him a shot. However, he's never been more intriguing than he is right now because Tyler Seguin's knee injury has led to Cole logging minutes on a line with Jason Spezza and Jamie Benn. You can't ask for much better linemates than that.
