Crawford has Tommy John surgery

Boston Red Sox outfielder Carl Crawford underwent Tommy John surgery on his left elbow on Thursday as scheduled, the team announced.

The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. Although Crawford is out for the remainder of this season, the team expects him to make a full recovery.

The procedure was performed to replace the torn ulnar collateral ligament in Crawford's throwing arm.

Recovery time for such a procedure typically is six to nine months, so it's possible Crawford will be ready for spring training next year.

He is in the second year of a seven-year, $142 million contract with Boston. He hit. 282 with three homers this season.
