Cornerbacks the Buffalo Bills could sign to replace Stephon Gilmore

With the likelihood of Stephon Gilmore leaving the Buffalo Bills this offseason at an all time high, the Bills will need to find a new starting cornerback as they enter the 2017 season. While the team will likely retain the services of Ronald Darby unless something major occurs, the Bills will have one cornerback position to fill.

While the team could wait till we arrive at the NFL Draft due to the depth of this year’s cornerback draft class. However, with other areas of need existing on this team, the Bills would likely be better served by signing someone during free agency this offseason. With so many talented corners available, the team should be able to convince one to commit their future to the team.

Two players that are expected to reach free agency this offseason are Prince Amukamara and A.J. Bouye. Both players are young, talented and have the ability to play every down football. Even better news for the team could be the fact that they are likely to come much cheaper than Stephon Gilmore, who could command near $15 million per season this offseason.

Given an earn it contract this past season by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Prince Amukamara did everything he needed to do in order to prove himself both to the league and to the executives in Jacksonville. Playing in 14 of the Jaguars games last season, Amukamara recorded 49 tackles last season and six pass deflections. Add to this the fact that Amukamara played 81% of the Jaguars defensive snaps last season and Amukamara is ready for a big deal this offseason.

A.J Bouye on the other hand is someone that came out of nowhere this past season. While Amukamara was a starter the first day he walked into an NFL locker room, Bouye had to earn his role in Houston. Becoming an every game starter this past season, Bouye recorded 63 tackles, a sack and an interceptions last season while also playing 73% of the Texans defensive snaps.

With both players coming at a discounted price compared to Stephon Gilmore, both players should be targets of the Buffalo Bills this offseason. With replacing Gilmore likely to be a priority, these two players present options that should accomplish this goal.
