College football roundup: Penn State to start freshman QB
True freshman Christian Hackenberg will be Penn State's starting quarterback in the opener against Syracuse, ESPN.com reported.
Head coach Bill O'Brien has not publicly announced his starter, but he said during a Thursday night radio show that he and the team knew who the starting quarterback would be on Saturday.
Sources told ESPN.com that the choice is Hackenberg, who was ESPN's top-rated passer of the 2013 high school class.
He beat out junior college quarterback Tyler Ferguson, who enrolled at Penn State last January and held a slight edge over Hackenberg early in preseason camp.
--- Washington tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, a possible first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, has been suspended for Saturday's opener against No. 19 Boise State as a result of a drunk-driving charge during the offseason, the Seattle Times reported.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian originally had suspended Seferian-Jenkins for two games as a result of the offense that occurred last March. But he reduced the suspension to one game after Seferian-Jenkins fulfilled the coach's disciplinary requirements.
Seferian-Jenkins had broken his right pinkie finger during preseason practice, and that had limited his practice time. However, that injury apparently has nothing to do with the suspension. He had been medically cleared to play in the opener against the Broncos.
---Two Ohio players - starting cornerback Larenzo Fisher and reserve quarterback Greg Windham - have been suspended indefinitely, according to the Athens Messenger, after being arrested and charged with multiple felonies involving drug trafficking.
The Bobcats will open the season against No. 9 Louisville.
