College football roundup: NCAA to announce Miami sanctions Tuesday

The NCAA will announce University of Miami's punishment in its case involving former booster Nevin Shapiro on Tuesday morning.

It confirmed that it scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. ET to discuss its decision.

Miami, which will be notified of the decision before it is released to the public, already self-imposed two years of postseason bans and suspended players multiple games for infractions but additional penalties are expected.

The school met with the NCAA's Committee on Infractions in June, but the committee has taken longer than the typical six to eight weeks after the hearing to release its report.

The NCAA claims that 72 student-athletes received benefits in excess of $170,000 from Shapiro, a convicted felon.

---Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti apologized for comments he made about Washington State coach Mike Leach after Saturday's game.

Aliotti took issue with Leach continuing to call pass plays with his starters in the game while Oregon played its reserves in the second half of the Ducks' 62-38 blowout victory. After the game, Aliotti called Leach's actions "low class."

"I'm embarrassed that I got caught up in the moment after the game," Aliotti said in a statement Monday. "There's no excuse, but sometimes right after the game the adrenaline is still flowing and I made a huge, human error in judgment. I wish I could take it back, and I promise it won't happen again."

--- Members of the Grambling State football team said the squad will return to practice this week and resume its season after boycotting its game with Jackson State on Saturday.

The players did not show up for practices last Wednesday and Thursday and decided not to play in Saturday's game because of what they said were poor facilities, the firing of popular coach Doug Williams and long bus rides to Kansas City and Indianapolis for games.

The team met with several former Grambling players this weekend as well as Baton Rouge businessman Jim Bernhard, all of whom advised the players to end their boycott, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

---North Carolina State quarterback Brandon Mitchell will return to the starting lineup for Saturday's game against No. 3 Florida State after missing five games with a broken foot.

Mitchell was 3-for-3 for 91 yards before breaking his left foot in the third offensive series of the season-opener against Louisiana Tech.

His replacement, Pete Thomas, has thrown eight interceptions and just three touchdown passes for North Carolina State (3-3).
