College football roundup: Cutcliffe gets another coach of year award
Duke's David Cutcliffe was named the Maxwell Football Club Collegiate Coach of the Year Friday.
It was the Blue Devils coach's second major individual honor of the season. He also earned the Walter Camp Coach of the Year award.
Cutcliffe guided Duke to the school's first 10-win season, first eight-game winning streak and first ACC Coastal division title this year.
Under Cutcliffe, the Blue Devils made their first bowl appearance in 18 years last season. Duke (10-3) is headed back to another one when it plays Texas A&M (8-4) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31.
Cutcliffe won the Maxwell Award over finalists Gus Malzahn of Auburn and Missouri's Gary Pinkel.
--- Former Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield, who was named the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year by the conference's coaches, will enroll at Oklahoma in January, the Austin American-Statesman reported.
Mayfield, who started seven games for the Red Raiders, announced earlier this month he planned to transfer. Texas Tech has not permitted Mayfield to contact members of the Oklahoma coaching staff, so he has not been offered a scholarship by the Sooners. As a result, Mayfield plans to join the Sooners as a walk-on in the spring, according to the report.
---Alabama suspended reserve linebacker Xzavier Dickson and freshman running back Alvin Kamara for the Sugar Bowl.
Alabama (11-1) plays Oklahoma (10-2) on Jan. 2.
Dickson played in all 12 games this year and his role increased as the season went on. The junior was listed as a co-starter against Auburn along with sophomore Denzel Devall. Kamara did not appear in a game this season.

The Fighting Irish begin playing a set of ACC teams next year as part of scheduling agreement with the conference. They compete in the conference in every sport accept football.
---UCLA linebacker Eric Kendricks, the team's leading tackler, was scheduled to have ankle surgery on Friday and will not play in the Dec. 31 Sun Bowl against Virginia Tech, the Los Angeles Times reported.
---Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon, who rushed for 1,466 yards this past season, will return for his redshirt junior season in 2014, he announced.
