College football roundup: Couric to get on-camera interview with Te'o
Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o has agreed to an on-camera interview with Katie Couric to be broadcast Thursday on her syndicated show "Katie."
ABC made the announcement Sunday but offered no details on when and where the interview will take place with Te'o and Couric, a special correspondent for the network.
Te'o discussed the girlfriend hoax story Friday night with ESPN's Jeremy Schaap, but he would not allow the two-hour session to be taped for broadcast.
Te'o's parents, Brian and Ottilia, will join him for his first on-air interview since the alleged catfishing hoax became public last week.
The New York Times reported that Oprah Winfrey, one week removed from her sitdown with Lance Armstrong, also wanted to interview Te'o.
Couric will offer previews of the Te'o interview this week on ABC's "Good Morning America" and "Nightline," USA Today reported.
In the interview with Schaap, Te'o said he had fudged several details of the story about a girlfriend who had leukemia, Lennay Kekua, that didn't exist but added that he was never a part of the scheme.
Meanwhile, Notre Dame officials defended their handling of the Te'o hoax, saying "we handled it as best we could."
School officials spoke with the South Bend Tribune on Saturday, saying they thought about releasing details of the hoax when they learned about it, but didn't think it would be in the best interests leading up to the BCS national title game.
Coach Brian Kelly first found out about the hoax the morning after Christmas when Te-o called from Hawaii.
---The University of Oregon promoted offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich to replace Chip Kelly as head coach.
The university made the announcement at a news conference Sunday.
Helfrich has served as the Ducks' offensive coordinator since 2009.
--- Quarterback Clint Moseley, who made nine career starts for Auburn, is leaving the team, coach Gus Malzahn confirmed, according to CollegeFootballTalk.com.
Moseley, who started three games in 2012, plans to stay enrolled at Auburn for now so he can get his degree. Once he graduates, he can transfer to another FBS school without having to sit out a year.
--- Kansas linebacker Ben Heeney, a second-team all-Big 12 selection, was cited for misdemeanor battery in an incident that occurred last Sunday outside a bar, the Lawrence Journal-World reported. According to the report, Heeney apparently "battered employees" at the bar after he was asked to leave.
Jayhawks coach Charlie Weis issued a statement, saying Kansas officials are aware of the incident and that it will be handled internally.
