Caps hold 3-2 series advantage despite quiet Ovechkin
At the start of their first-round series against the Boston Bruins, Capitals coach Dale
Hunter was asked if his team could win a series without Alex Ovechkin scoring.
He said it could.
After five games it appears Hunter may be right. The Capitals are one win away from
knocking the defending Stanley Cup champions out of the playoffs and their captain's only
goal of the series came in a Game 3 loss.
On Saturday afternoon in Boston, it was the secondary scoring of Jay Beagle and Mike
Knuble that helped pave the way for Troy Brouwer's game-winning power-play goal with 1:27
remaining in regulation to give the Capitals a 4-3 win.
Every game in the series has been decided by one goal. The two teams go at it again at
3 p.m. on Sunday in Washington.
While Ovechkin has been relatively quiet with one goal and three assists in the series,
Alex Semin has been explosive with a team-high three goals. But the story of the series
has been 22-year-old rookie goaltender Braden Holtby, who has stopped 175 of 185 shots in
the first five games.
"He's a tremendous athlete who works hard and I love the kid," Capitals left wing Matt
Hendricks said. "I'm happy for his success so far, but it's not done yet."
