Capitals re-sign defenseman Green

The Washington Capitals re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Mike Green to a three-year contract worth $18.25 million contract.

"Mike is one of the best young defensemen in the National Hockey League and is just entering his prime," said George McPhee, vice president and general manager of the Capitals, in a news release.

Green, 26, earned a total of $15 million over the past three seasons but has been bothered by groin and abdominal injuries that limited his availability since 2010. He totaled 81 games from 2010-12 after playing in 76 games in 2009-10.

Green turned down the Capitals' qualifying offer on Sunday -- a one-year contract worth $5 million.

The deadline to accept the deal was 5 p.m. ET Sunday, but McPhee said Saturday the expiration date on qualifying offers as an "artificial deadline."
