The prospect label is quickly becoming unnecessary when describing hard-hitting heavyweight Francis Ngannou. The Cameroon native, who fights out of France proved he is the real deal Saturday night with first-round TKO of former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski.

Ngannou, who entered the Octagon as a heavy favorite, has built a reputation as a sure-fire, early round finisher. And he further cemented that reputation by stopping Arlovski at the 1:32 mark.

A glancing overhand right, followed by a solid left flush on the chin ended Arlovski’s night. What makes Ngannou dangerous isn’t simply his frightening power, but his humility.

“I’m very happy for the fight for me, it’s the best step,” Ngannou said after improving to 10-1. “I’m very happy to win the fight because I improved.”

One area Ngannou has improved is his ranking on the contenders’ list. He entered the bout at No. 10. Arlovski entered the cage ranked seventh. At the very least they will exchange positions.

Despite his latest impressive victory, Ngannou has yet to answer one question: How will he react when pushed beyond a round or two? If his stamina proves not to be an issue, then UFC heavyweight champion will be the label Ngannou will wear in the not-too-distant future.

In the meantime, UFC management must figure out who next to place in the Octagon opposite the promotion’s fast-rising crowd-pleasure.

Arlovski falls to 25-14 with one no-contest. His losing skid increases to four.
