Brandin Cooks has four visits lined up
In today's college game, the players putting up the best statistics are coming out of spread offenses that hurry to the line of scrimmage and sling the ball all over the field.
That's probably what makes Oregon State wide receiver Brandin Cooks' 2013 season more remarkable. Coming from a pro style offense, Cooks caught 128 passes for 1,730 yards and 16 touchdowns. His yardage total was an NCAA FBS best, with his touchdown numbers checking in at second behind Fresno State's Davante Adams (24).
Cooks is only 5-11, but has shown an ability to win jump balls, beat defenders deep and to make plays after the catch. A physical receiver, he's drawn comparisons to Ravens receiver Steve Smith.
It's one reason why he's become a hot name of late. Appearing on the NFL Network, Cooks said he has four visits lined up with the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.
"Going into the NFL now, I feel like I'll be a step ahead of those rookies that's coming in due to the fact I come from a pro style offense, since I'm familiar with that," Cooks said.
Cooks hasn't jumped into the conversation as a top 10 pick, though he seems to be generating plenty of buzz. Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans are regarded as the top two, with Cooks being in the conversation as one of the best after those two.
"I give credit where credit's due," Cooks said. "Sammy Watkins is a great receiver. Mike Evans is a great receiver. But I feel I'm right there and I know I am. I know what I can bring to the table. Whoever gets me is getting a No. 1 guy."
