Bonifacio out at least a month due to thumb surgery
Miami Marlins center fielder Emilio Bonifacio said he would have surgery Friday on his left thumb, and he'll be out four to six weeks.
Bonifacio was placed on the disabled list Sunday after leaving the May 18 game in Cleveland.
He injured the thumb with a head-first slide into second base -- the only time he was caught stealing in 21 tries this year. The injury was initially diagnosed as a sprain.
"I know it was very bad. I think the reason they're going to have surgery is to prevent future (injuries) ... and not have to deal with that for the rest of his career," manager Ozzie Guillen said.
Bonifacio leads the majors with 20 steals.
"Obviously we are losing a big piece," Guillen said. "I think everybody has to step it up."
Left fielder Austin Kearns also went on the disabled list Thursday with a left hamstring ailment, leaving two holes in the outfeld. Chris Coghlan played center field Wednesday and went 0-for-4 in the Marlins' 14-7 loss to the San Francisco Giants. Greg Dobbs, who started the game in left field, went 2-for-3.
