Blues 6, Blackhawks 5 (SO)
ST. LOUIS -- Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk scored in the fifth round of the shootout to give the St. Louis Blues a 6-5 win Saturday night over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Goalie Brian Elliott stopped a shot by left wing Brandon Saad following Shattenkirk's goal, which came with the two teams tied 2-2 in the shootout.
The Blues also got goals from right wing T.J. Oshie and right wing Vladimir Tarasenko in the shootout while Chicago scored on goals by center Jonathan Toews and left wing Patrick Sharp.
The Blues had to rally from deficits of 3-1 and 5-3 in the game, tying it for the second time with just 2:34 to play in regulation. The Blackhawks had the best scoring chance in overtime when Toews broke in alone but was stopped by Elliott with 1:10 to play.
The Blackhawks had come back from a 3-3 tie to take a 5-3 lead on goals by Saad with 2:14 left in the second period and an unassisted goal by defenseman Brent Seabrook 1:06 into the third period.
Tarasenko scored with 3:51 to play to pull the Blues within 5-4 and a holding penalty against Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson 43 seconds later gave St. Louis a power play to try to tie the game, which they did on a goal by center Patrik Berglund 34 seconds into the penalty.
The Blues fell behind 3-1 after the first period before rallying to tie the game on second-period goals by left wing Jaden Schwartz, his fourth in as many games, and right wing Dmitrij Jaskin, who scored his first career goal in his fourth game in the NHL.
The tie lasted for only 9:59, however, before Saad picked up the puck after a blocked shot and fired it past Elliott, who replaced Jaroslav Halak in net for St. Louis at the start of the second period.
The Blackhawks built the early lead by scoring on three of their first 11 shots against Halak. Left wing Patrick Sharp, who had a hat trick Friday night, got the scoring started with his 22nd goal of the year at 7:48 when he split St. Louis defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester and fired the puck past Halak.
Center Andrew Shaw followed with a power-play goal 2:07 later while Tarasenko was serving a minor tripping penalty. After Blues center Maxim Lapierre cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal at 14:04, the Blackhawks got the margin back to two goals when right wing Patrick Kane scored his 23rd goal of the year at 17:04.
Kane also earned an assist on Shaw's goal while Toews and defenseman Duncan Keith each had two assists for the Blackhawks.
NOTES: The Blues placed LW Alexander Steen on injured reserve Saturday because of a concussion. Steen, second in the NHL with 24 goals, will be out for an "indefinite" period, the team said. The Blues believe the concussion is the culmination of several recent hits and not the result of one specific incident. ... To replace Steen the Blues recalled LW Sergey Andronov from their AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, where he recorded a hat trick on Friday night, but he was a pre-game scratch. ... The Blackhawks think G Corey Crawford, who missed his ninth consecutive game Saturday night because of a lower-body injury, could be ready to play by the end of next week. ... This was the third of five games between the Blues and Blackhawks. They will not meet again until March 19 in Chicago. ... The Blues play at Dallas on Sunday night while the Blackhawks return home to host the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night.
