Best XI: Week 6

Welcome back to the BEST XI! First of all, I want to thank Rob for covering for me last week as I had to deal with some personal responsibilities. I hope you guys enjoyed his content because it was fantastic. Before I digress too much, let’s get to this week’s Best XI.

Best XI

It’s yet another 3-4-3 formation this week and a very predictable XI. We have a lot of guys in here who we expect to see on the list, like the regulars David Costa and Ryan Shawcross. Who has impressed me the most lately is Mile Jedinak, who has always been an extremely solid midfielder but his recent goalscoring has put him in the premium category.

Points

The top possible score this week in an allowable formation was 224 points. We’ve had a slight drop-off in the past two weeks, and I’m not sure if it’s because players are getting tired and we are seeing less goals or if it’s just a coincidence. It’s something to follow in the coming weeks.

Cost

This week, the top score did not fit within our £ 96M budget by just £ 0.31M, coming in at a cost of £ 82.83M*. The new price of our Best XI (if you were to try to create this team now after the price changes) is £ 119.05M. That’s a 23.6% increase in price.

*Keep in mind the cost does NOT include any substitutes and is thus 96M instead of 100M.

MVP

The highest score of the week was a very surprising one – Craig Dawson. The West Brom defender scored a match-winning goal in West Brom’s rout over Burnley and was further helped by a clean sheet and an array of defensive stats. West Brom have been much better after a horrific start to the season and are a good bet for home matches. Definitely an interesting development here and a story keep an eye on.

Best ROI

The best return on your investment this week was once again Martin Kelly, who someone still only cost £ 1.97M before the weekend started. His 15 points were very impressive and we’d recommend using him even at his current £ 4.78M price tag. There are a number of defenders who are in Kelly's price range that make for good weekly bets, and I'd recommend you check Steve's Bargain column later this week for the best ones.

Formation

The Best XI was in a 3-4-3 formation and we’re definitely seeing a clear trend here. The 3-4-3 formation is taking a big lead ahead of the others, and it’s becoming more and more convincing that playing three strikers is the way to go. You don’t have to believe me, believe the numbers.

I’ve listed the players who have been seen here multiple times and will keep this going as we go forward. As of now, we have Ryan Shawcross and Diego Costa as the only two players who’ve been on here three times.

Team Rankings

Stoke City continue to lead the list but Chelsea have caught up! It’s worth noting that both Chelsea and Stoke have a player with three “Best XI” awards, Shawcross and Costa respectively. West Brom are surprisingly third with five appearances.
