Bears coach Smith: Forte does not have high ankle sprain

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith said Monday that running back Matt Forte does not have a high ankle sprain but it is still sore, according to ESPN Chicago.

Forte injured the ankle during last Thursday's loss to the Green Bay Packers. The Bears signed running back Kahlil Bell to a one-year contract Saturday after cutting him during the preseason because he refused to take a pay cut.

"Matt did go down with an ankle injury. It's not a high ankle sprain, as has been reported," Smith told WBBM radio in Chicago. "But right now, you know when you don't finish the game and he still has some soreness, we'll continue to monitor it, but we felt we needed another running back here, that's why we brought back a guy who knows our system and has played good ball for us in Kahlil Bell."

It is not known how long Forte will be out.
