BASEBALL RECAP: St. John's 9, North Carolina 5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - St. John's knocked off No. 1-seeded North Carolina for the second straight day on the Tar Heels' home field to claim the Chapel Hill Regional on Sunday. UNC was ranked sixth nationally.

The Red Storm (40-21) went through the four-team double-elimination regional unscathed, wrapping up the title Sunday night with a 9-5 win. Sophomore first baseman Frank Schwindel was 5-for-5, including three hits leading off an inning. James Lomangino worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh, striking out right fielder Shell McCain after walking in a run to shrink the SJU lead to 7-5. The Red Storm pushed two more runs across in the top of the ninth.

Third-seeded St. John's beat UNC Saturday, 5-4, on a walk-off three-run home run by junior catcher Danny Bethea after opening the regional with an 11-3 win over East Carolina on Friday.

St. John's advances to take on the winner of the Tucson Regional.
