July 9 (The Sports Xchange) - Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel will undergo surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee and is expected to miss 3-6 weeks, the team announced Saturday. The right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a medial meniscus tear. Kimbrel, 28, will have surgery on Monday. He was unavailable Friday night for the ninth inning of a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays after tweaking his left knee while shagging fly balls during batting practice. Cespedes and Syndergaard left Friday's game with injuries. Syndergaard departed in the fifth inning because of arm fatigue, and he is also taking anti-inflammatory medication for a bone spur in his pitching elbow. Cespedes left because of a quadriceps injury. Fowler has been out since June 18 because of a hamstring injury but was hoping to return in time for the All-Star Game. On Saturday, he decided he did not want to push it and decided to withdraw. He was the leading vote-getter in the All-Star balloting. Cespedes and Fowler were named to the National League starting lineup by the fans' vote. Marcell Ozuna of the Miami Marlins and Carlos Gonzalez of the Colorado Rockies will start in the outfield for the National League, while Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte and Cincinnati Reds outfielder Jay Bruce will replace Fowler and Cespedes on the National League roster. San Diego Padres left-hander Drew Pomeranz will replace Syndergaard. In the American League, injured Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel will be replaced by Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez. - - - Chicago White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon was placed on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to July 6 because of a sprained left wrist. Rodon said he slipped on the dugout steps and injured his wrist as he tried to break his fall. Green gave up three home runs in the first inning and four home runs overall in a 10-2 loss Friday. To replace Green on the roster, the Yankees recalled right-hander Nick Goody from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. - - - The Cleveland Indians claimed left-hander Tyler Olson off waivers from the Kansas City Royals and optioned him to Triple-A Columbus.
