Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals became the 84th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points during their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night.

Naturally, Ovechkin reached the milestone via a goal and he didn’t wait very long into the game to send the Verizon Center crowd into a frenzy. He only needed 35 seconds.

With the goal, Ovechkin not only hit 1,000 points, but he also broke a tie for 29th all-time with Maurice Richard on the goals scored list with his 545th. In his sights next are Michel Goulet (548), Ron Francis (549), John Bucyk (556) and Guy LaFleur (561). It’s not out of the question that by the end of the season he could be just outside the top 20.

According to the Capitals, Wednesday night was Ovechkin’s 880th career NHL game, making him the second-fastest active player (Jaromir Jagr is the first) to reach 1,000 points and the 24th-fastest in league history to hit the mark. He’s also the 37th player in history to reach the milestone with one franchise.

Ovechkin wasn’t done yet, of course. Midway through the second period he added goal No. 546, power play goal No. 203 and point No. 1,001 with his second tally of the night. The Capitals would go on to win 5-2.

When all is said and done with Oveckin’s career, he’s going to have quite the impressive Hall of Fame resume.
