We're waiting with bated breath for the overreaction on Lyoto Machida's win when it comes to the next pound-for-pound list. How high does he rise on the basis of his first huge win? Does he move in front of B.J. Penn, Georges St. Pierre, Anderson Silva or Miguel Torres?

Shawn Tompkins, the head trainer at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, says slow down and don't give Machida too much credit for the Evans win. He suggested that Evans' fight plan was flawed and allowed Machida to play perfectly to all his strengths (1:30 mark):

"Rashad ran the whole time. I don't know if he got out there and threw the gameplan out and gave him too much respect after one of those hits," Tompkins told Cofield and Cokin on ESPNRadio1100 in Las Vegas that opponents need to be in Machida's face to beat him. "Rashad did none of that. He gave Lyoto everything he needed to make himself look invincible."

The diagnosis for taking down "The Dragon" is starting to sound like the same one we hear for Anderson Silva:

"You need to be a wrestler. You need to be chest to chest with that guy and you need either be pressuring him against the cage or putting him on his back. We really got to see him on his back."

Tompkins also said pre-fight drilling against karate fighters is a must:

"I'm going to go to three of the best karate schools in the area, get their best guys and work that timing, because that's all it is."

The discussion turned to what's next for Machida now that he's been left out of the mix for The Ultimate Fighter 10. We threw out names like Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Brandon Vera, Luiz Cane and Shogun Rua. MMABay is reporting a Machida-Rua fight is set and slated for September.

Watch the end of the conversation. Xtreme Couture is an interesting setting right now with Randy Couture and his wife Kim getting a divorce. Tompkins fills us in on what's been going on.

Affliction on Friday made its third event, "Trilogy," official, via its official website. The posting on its site confirms the main event bout pitting current No. 1 ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko against No. 2 ranked Josh Barnett. As previously reported, the event will take place on Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The main card bouts will be broadcast live on Showtime PPV with the undercard telecast live on HDNet.
Though the announcement does not make official any other fight pairings, it does indicate the participation of several fighters. Joining Emelianenko and Barnett are Gegard Mousasi, Ben Rothwell, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Tim Sylvia, Mark Hominick, Dan Lauzon, Chris Horodecki, and Paul Buentello. Mousasi and Belfort are in negotiations to fight each other on the card, but are having difficulty agreeing on what weight to fight at. Mousasi has publicly stated that he can no longer make the weight cut to 185 pounds, while Belfort is reluctant to move up from the class he has recently declared his new home.
While confirmation is still forthcoming, it has been widely speculated that Sylvia will face Buentello on Aug. 1 and Lauzon will hook up with Horodecki.
Although neither was included on Friday's announcement, MMAPayout.com recently reported that Jay Hieron and Paul Daley will square off at Trilogy.

In order to get that " chest to chest " battle you have to get in the reach of Machida. Their lies the problem. To get timing down, you have to train with that person. Not just train at any Karate school.
P4P list Machida should move up, but to number 5 or 6. He will need acouple more convincing wins (KO's) before being put in with Fedor,GSP,Silva, and I'd hate to say it but evening BJ.

Tompkins' game plan is flawed on almost every point. The most obvious one is the wrestler statement. First, the fighter must be able to get in range for the take down attempt. Considering that Machida is such an elusive fighter, this would be very difficult for his opponent. If the wrestler is able to shoot in, Machida has Sumo training which gives him great balance. If Machida is taken down (it is possible), he still has his BJJ to fall back on. I'm not saying a wrestler couldn't beat Machida, but it would be a bit more difficult than Tompkins makes it seem.

Tompkins game plan sounds like this. Throw a jab, shot in and get caught with Machidas left on the way in. Now go night, night like Rashad.

Why would it be overeaction to move Machida up in the (unofficial) p4p rankings? Please explain that. Did the guy not just knock, in dramatic fashion, the LHW champion. What would be a "level headed" response as far the rankings are concerned? Move him up one spot, leave him where he's at? Please explain yourself.

As annoying as the non-stop Cofield bashing on here can get, what is with the backhanded remark ("overreaction")? He's 15-0, no one has figured him out yet, and furthermore, the guy has not LOST A SINGLE ROUND in a fight to date. You don't feel that a decent argument can be made for him being one of, if not the, best fighters currently active? You know, Cofield, some of the remarks lately are difficult to understand.

Putting that aside, though, it'll be interesting to see if Tompkins is right on whether or not "karate timing" is the sole secret to Machida's success ... Personally, I think Machida has Fedor-like (or better) visual-spatial and kinesthetic senses and an iron discipline, and that these are the main source of his abilities rather than just style of training. If Tompkins' view is correct, any old karate or tai kwon do fighter ought to be able to enter MMA and clean house, and obviously this is BS. We'll see.

I think Shogun is going to get owned, but I can see the logic behind giving him the next shot. He did look decent against Chuck Liddell. Shogun has a well-rounded game, and I agree that an opponent probably stands a better chance when getting Machida on the ground (see Henderson vs. Silva, round 1) as compared to standing there and trying to counter-strike (ala Evans) or being overly aggressive during stand-up exchanges (Thiago Silva). Nobody should try to stand and strike with Machida. I don't see that working out barring a lucky punch, and Machida could go through a lot of guys before someone lands said punch.

Machida has lost a round, just not in the UFC. I think the Shogun fight will be interesting, but won't call Machida untouchable in the division until he fights Rampage. I think Shogun will take the fight to the ground, unlike Rashad. Shogun is pretty slick and should be dangerous on top if he comes in shape. Dan Henderson would be a good match up for Machida, but then again, I thought he'd match up better against Anderson. I agree with the interview that a lot of good wrestlers are relying too much on their hands.
June 24th to August 29th for a training camp for the Nogueira fight? Good luck Randy!

Shogun doesn't stand a chance. Shogun has only ever shown a shadow of his former self, and beating a very old and fallen and broken chuck liddell doesnt put you in the same breath as a younger, faster, stronger, harder, better, smarter fighter like Machida. Machida is beatable, sure, but i disagree with the statement made by tompkins. someone will eventually figure out the puzzle, but ill wager any amount of money that that someone is NOT shogun, or cane, or vera, or liddell, or couture, or griffin, or jackson, or jaradine, or any other of the number of 205ers said to be the best in thier division. Make no mistake, We are now in the Dragon Era.

Man, how could anyone say it is Karate that is giving him his success. His hard work and obvious talent to implement his technique in Karate that has him virtually untouchable. As much as we hate Tito, he had the most success in taking Machida to the ground but still got beat up pretty good. I really can't even remember a time dating back to his Pride days when this guy even had a mark or bruise on his face after a fight. Heck, even the immortal Fedor looked like he had been in a fight after the Hong Man-Choi and Arloski fights.
For these reasons, I don't see why guys like Tompkins can't give the man his props. It's obvious he has learned from all his battles with different styles that has made him so good. He doesn't seem content with simple victories. All the talk about him being boring has driven the man to become obsessed with the wrongs he did after a victory like he did after giving Rashad a beat down.
    WOW!!!
Randy Couture probably got fed up with his wife getting beat up and her still thinking she has a career in this sport. If this is the case, I can't say I blame him.

I don't agree that Rua should get a title fight after only two wins. He lost to Griffin. He barely won over Coleman. He looked good against Liddell.
I think Luiz Cane or the one guy who recently beat Brian Stann should be line. Or even Bisping.

Negation Of The MACHIDA GAME........A Dummy's Guide for Defeating Lyoto Machida
    What up Ladies and Gents!
I posted this on another site this afternoon.
    Concerning Lyoto Machida:
In my view, Machida has to this point, enjoyed a huge advantage over his opponents, in that they have, for the most part, fought him in the traditional stances.
Plainly put, Lyoto Machida does not 'fight' his opponents; he plays the 'Machida Game'.
    Machida Game rules:
    1) Employ the Machida Stance & keep your body at safe distance from opponent. The Safe Zone.
    2) Faux offense: employ kicks to body and legs to frustrate opponent, but never put body in position which compromises Machida Stance or Safe Zone. Don't take risky chances; but if opponent telegraphs a punch, beat the opponent to punch, leading to further frustration!
    3) Finishing Move: await the Kyo!
Bum-rush the opponent at opponents Negative Momentum Apex. Leap into opponent, into the Killing Space. Attacks at the NMA within the Killing Space startle the opponent psychologically, almost to the point of helplessness. Inflict maximum damage!!!
Lyoto Machida is toying with his opponents, because he is using an advanced fighting method against conventional fighting styles. This cerebral fighting method will make anyone look silly and slow!
To negate the Machida Game, an opponent could do several things:
    A)
    1) Lure him into Killing Space by giving him a faux NMA.
    2) Knock him out before he knocks you out!
    B)
    1) After the bell rings, TURN INTO A LINEBACKER AND TACKLE THE FOOL. You may catch an elbow or jab, but do not allow him to have a Safe Zone! Chase him like children on a playground if you must....but YOU MUST PUT YOUR HANDS ON HIM INSIDE OF THE 1ST 20 SECONDS OF MATCH. Disrupt his Game!
    2) Trip him, and put him down.
    3) Ground and pound, or
    4) Submit him
    C)
    1) In the case of an opponent such as Cung Le, use targeted kicks to punish his lead leg and body, but always be mindful that Machida is looking for the Kyo (moment of opponents imbalance) and will attack you then.
    2) When Machida attacks, match his fire with FIRE.
The Machida Game is an AWESOME defensive Fighting style that gives Machida an almost unfair advantage. But there are ways to negate it.
    That is all.....

keith you're so wise and all knowing. i love your detailed instructions such as: submit him. i'm sure all mma fighters will keep that in mind.
i think luiz cane showed some stamina weakness and a few holes in his striking as well in his last fight against cantwell, even though he won the fight it appeared as if he would lose to machida for sure. but i have no argument supporting any better ideas so i'd like to see that fight as well. but honestly, i think only anderson can offer a legitimate threat at this point in time.
and dubya, the guy that recently beat brian stann? krystof? dude, anyone who knows submissions and uses them can beat brian stann. i agree krystof is good, has gotten better and will continue to do so...but he's not ready becaue he beat brian stann.
vincent......machida's pride days? which days were those? oh you mean the days he fought in japan for k1? it's funny still how little people pay attention to anything that isn't stateside.

and i haven't actually seen the fight...i plan on finding it online when i get the chance, but from looking at machida's record, the closest fight of his in the judge's minds was his fight against Sam Greco which ended in a split decision.
sam greco was a VERY talented kickboxer who has been up against some of the VERY BEST strikers in the world in K1. oh yeah....and did i mention he's got a very impressive kyokushin KARATE background? now again, i haven't seen this fight but could greco's karate skills have been the key to making the fight close enough for one of the judges to give him the nod? could be something there, but i'll have to check it out.
