He's old so we'll cut him a break. Not really. Legendary boxer Jake LaMotta, now 88, gave this quick quote about mixed martial arts:

"When they hit you on the floor? That doesn’t make any sense, it’s savage." The now 88 year old Lamotta told Reuters. "It’s out of control, I still think the regular way is the best way."

LaMotta wasn't exactly a wallflower. Thevideo features Robert DeNiro, playing LaMotta in Raging Bull. and what he "allegedly" did to his wife (NSFW - 0:35 mark) over the years. Make sure you watch at the 2:10 mark when he seems to mount and hit his brother, a downed opponent.

You're never going to convince or teach a guy like LaMotta about MMA. Let him believe what he wants. But it is ironic that a guy who had no self-control is opining about savagery or lack of control.

He's pretty fun to use on Fight Night R4. After the sorry TUF episodes and the last UFC event, he's at least on to something...not so much that it's savage, but more that it's all hype...hell, I was hoping someone, anyone, would hit their opponent on the ground the last TUF show. Slowly becoming an old fad....

Here goes Scofield again. Predictably trying to widen the rift between mma and boxing by finding old, over the hill, set in their ways and opinions, people that make disparaging comments. Then discredit and contradict them by comparing it to their previous behavior.
1st, LaMotta has been a fine, upstanding citizen for over 50 years and respected by everyone. 2nd, it was a movie Scofield. Movies are notoriously inaccurate. While he admitted that he was mean and drank too much. It was never proven that LaMotta was violent towards his wife.
    Sensationalist journalism at its best.
Im thinking that Scofield has finally realized he is making no money here and his days are numbered. So he is putting together a resume to make the jump to TMZ or Hollywood Insider maybe?
Sorry Scofield. I don't think they take city junior college AA degrees in sports journalism with a D average.

I am sure if you ask any person over the age of 65 they will say the same thing about MMA compared to boxing.
    It's a generational thing.

....and seriously, he was talking about the sport itself, unless you omitted quotes where he started defending his position with regard to his personal affairs...geez dude at least stay in bounds with the arguments. I'm sure mr cofield has a few demons in his closet that he wouldn't like coming out each time he had in opinion.

LaMotta, because it makes more sense to stand in front of somebody for 15 rounds and constantly get punched in the face. MMA is the true sweet science, boxing is just a small equation of MMA. MMA is just more evolved than Boxing. It's like comparing the wheel to the car. The wheel makes up a small but important part of the car.

Personally I think it is great when these blowhards hit the ground and have to eat their words. Most of them still think they are the bullies they were in high school.

First you say he 'allegedly' did this and that, then you say he is being 'ironic' as he had no 'self control'..
cofield you are embarrassing to your craft. not only do you murder the english language daily in your blogs, you take a guy who is 88 to task for his views on mma? he probably doesn't even know what it is. nice work steve. belittling a former world champion who probably has to now wear depends at the ripe old age of 88. but in a ring or a cage, my money is on lamotta still kicking your sniveling a$$. doesnt dana have a tee time today?? go caddy and leave the english language alone. hack.

Instant money.. too bad there are mostly mma fighters that have no 'wheels'. what a retarded comparison. watch an episode of tuf and tell me that is more evolved and/or athletic.. all i see is guys who need some lipstick to go along with their man boobs. just because you can do more to your opponent doesnt make it more evolved. it is just a different kind of combat sport. and from what i've seen, there are tons of mma guys who could use some time in a boxing gym. unless you consider closing your eyes and throwing windmills evolution... got leben? sherk? liddell? couture? maia? etc etc.. all remedial when it comes to throwing a punch.. thus endeth the lesson. fanboy...

who cares? People will always have differing opinions, they have since the beginning of time. Why vilify a man simply because he doesn't agree with you.

Well Jake is known for his wild side and is just saying what most from Boxing think about the idea of not fighting on your feet. Yeah it sounds silly if you have been watching MMA for the last ten years but for a guy that grew up like Jake and did the things he did, its no surprise. He can't complain if he's judged harshly because of his age. Beating a woman or anybody for that matter is wrong unless in self defense.

Its sad when you hear an old boxer say something like that, funny thing is if he were a young man today what do you think he would be doing? I would put my money on MMA. I have to give him some credit because he was an excellent boxer.

When you think about it boxers always did have a reputation for hitting women!! NUTCRACKERJOEGAYMATH54 EXPOSED!!!

and seriously cofield? leave lamotta alone, or don't give the worthless piece of crap who interviewed him the time of day by stealing his quote that was probably strategically squeezed out of him and chopped up out of context specifically to your liking. disgusting that there's nothing more relevant to write about than some loser dangling a carrot in front of lamotta's face...of course he's gonna bite.

Did you really just base an opinion off a scene from a movie? Do you hate joe pesci because he yells at his kids too? Jake Lamotta is a icon. I dont remember him ever gassing after the first round of a fight.
Evolved? really? tatted up arm punchers with condom ads on their ass doenst exactly scream evolution to me.

Cofield is obsessed with BOXING!!!! Never fails....I dont like MMA, that is why only on yahoo I check the blogs in case I have to set people straight when these blogs go on. I know TUF is horrible......I know chuck is no longer dancing with the stars.....but there has to something to write about on MMA right?? Now he takes shots a a legend like Jake, he was a GREAT fighter and has done more than any UFC fighter to date. Let boxing be boxing and MMA be thier won different sport already. Boxers are not the only athletes who take shots at MMA, but he loves to stirr the pot.

Steve....take notes from eastsideboxing.com on blogs. REAL BLOGS not the garbage you post. Write about your sport already, look at great sites like Maxboxing.com, ringtv.com or fightnews.com. They write with class and dont take shots at other sports......you are degrading yahoo sports and you need to be fired already.
