Player Notes
Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said Monday that Oscar Taveras and Randal Grichuk should be ready to compete for the starting right field job next spring.

Advice: Grichuk served as the Cards' primary right fielder down the stretch in 2014 and then into the playoffs while questions emerged about Taveras' work ethic and physical conditioning. Taveras is the better prospect by far and will presumably arrive in Jupiter, Florida next February in tip-top shape. He'll have big time fantasy upside if he wins the competition.

Oscar Taveras on Tuesday admitted that he's "gained a few pounds."

Advice: MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch says it's been speculated that Taveras has gained about 20 pounds since undergoing ankle surgery last August. "I’m a little heavy; I’ve gained a few pounds," Taveras said. "But I’m working on that, and physically I feel good." The comments come two days after Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that he hopes Taveras not starting in the playoffs would be a "wake up" for him and that the team will give him conditioning suggestions over the offseason. Taveras wants to play winter ball, but Mozeliak said getting the outfielder in better shape is a bigger priority than getting him more at-bats.

Oscar Taveras belted a game-tying pinch-hit home run in the seventh inning on Sunday, helping to propel the Cardinals to a victory over the Giants in Game 2 of the NLCS.

Advice: Taveras, who has seen very limited playing time over the past month, entered as a pinch-hitter for the pitcher's spot in the lineup and promptly deposited a Jean Machi offering over the wall in right field to tie the game at 3-3. With his offensive potential, it wouldn't be surprising to see him replace Randall Grichuk in the starting lineup at some point in the series.
