Player Notes
Moved back into the leadoff spot, Matt Carpenter went 4-for-5 with two homers, a double and four runs scored in the Cardinals' 9-8 win over the Rockies on Thursday.

Advice: The Cardinals scored three in the bottom of the ninth to win it, with a Greg Garcia bases-loaded walk ending the game. Carpenter turned in far and away his best game since April. He hadn't had even three hits since May 22. The Cards will probably keep him in the leadoff spot for now, but that might not be bad news for Kolten Wong; Wong hit third with Matt Holliday out tonight.

Matt Carpenter went hitless again Tuesday, dropping his average to .252 on the year.

Advice: The third baseman went 0-for-4 and struck out twice against Reds starter Mike Leake, continuing his freefall since the end of May. Carpenter is now hitting .172 (15-for-87) with 19 strikeouts in July. He insists there's nothing physical going on, but there's certainly something wrong with the 29-year-old's swing right now.

Matt Carpenter has moved back to the second spot in the Cardinals' lineup for Thursday's makeup game against the visiting Royals.

Advice: Carpenter, who's been in an ugly slump since early June, spent the last two nights hitting seventh. He obviously carries more fantasy potential as a No. 2 hitter, but it might not be the best spot for him right now. Carpenter was sidelined earlier this season with a case of extreme fatigue and he has looked slow to fastballs over the last couple of months.

Matt Carpenter is batting seventh for the Cardinals again on Wednesday night against the White Sox.

Advice: Carpenter went 2-for-5 with an RBI out of that spot Tuesday in the Cardinals' 8-5 win at U.S. Cellular Field. The third baseman has been in an extended offensive slump and continuing to bat him lower in the lineup may help take some pressure off, though it does slightly dent his fantasy potential. Kolten Wong is leading off and Randal Grichuk is hitting second on Wednesday.

Matt Carpenter is hitting seventh for the Cardinals on Tuesday night against the White Sox.

Advice: This is just the second time since the beginning of 2013 that Carpenter has hit so low in the Cardinals' batting order. The third baseman is mired in an extended offensive slump, slashing .176/.315/.228 since June 1.
