Player Notes
Sonny Gray gave up six hits and allowed three runs against the Angels on Thursday.

Advice: Gray was victimized by the bottom portion of the Angels lineup. He allowed an RBI single to Erick Aybar in the second and a few batters later, Gordon Beckham drove in two. He struck out six and walked three as he managed his way through seven innings. Following a sterling 5-0 July, Gray is just 1-4 in August. These kinds of hiccups are to be expected of a second-year pitcher, as he learns how to pace himself through a full season. Despite the rough month, Gray still boasts a 3.03 ERA while holding opposing hitters to a .233 BAA. Gray will try to make his September a good one, starting with his scheduled start against the Mariners in a few days.

Sonny Gray fired another gem, holding the Angels to three runs on six hits over 8 1/3 innings in Friday's 5-3 victory.

Advice: Bob Melvin gave the youngster a short leash in his bid to work a complete game, hustling out of the dugout once he surpassed 100 pitches, and Sean Doolittle allowed one of the starter's runners to score, muddying his ledger a bit. Gray, who walked two and struck out five, has completed at least six innings in 22 out of 26 starts. The right-hander entered on a four-game losing streak (4.94 ERA); he had only lost two straight one time over his first 31 starts. Gray (13-7, 3.00 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) heads east to tangle with Houston next time around.
