Player Notes
Matt Wieters is not in the Nationals starting lineup for Saturday's Grapefruit League tilt against the Mets.

Advice: It'll be Derek Norris behind the dish on Saturday. Wieters, who is being eased into action after officially signing his deal on Friday, won't be in Sunday's lineup either as Jose Lobaton will handle the catching duties.

Nationals signed C Matt Wieters to a two-year, $21 million contract.

Advice: The deal was first reported on Tuesday and has now become official. Wieters' contract includes an opt-out after the first year, and $5 million of the salary is deferred. He'll assume everyday catching duties for the Nationals, which will put Derek Norris on the trade market.

Matt Wieters' new contract with the Nationals is likely to be finalized Friday.

Advice: Wieters took his physical on Wednesday and was at Nationals camp Thursday, but the club is holding off on making the agreement official. It seems to be a simple procedural thing, as a 40-man roster spot still has to be cleared. There's been talk of a Derek Norris trade. Wieters will get $21 million guaranteed on the two-year pact with Washington and figures to carry decent fantasy value as the Nats' regular catcher.

Matt Wieters will take his physical with the Nationals on Wednesday.

Advice: This will be the last step to finalizing his new two-year, $21 million contract. The Nationals' 40-man roster is full at the moment, so they will need to make a move to clear a spot for Wieters. Derek Norris now projects to slide into a backup role, but Nationals manager Dusty Baker indicated Tuesday that he could be a trade candidate.

Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post reports that the Nationals and Matt Wieters have agreed to a deal, pending a physical.

Advice: Previous reports indicated that a deal was close, but the two sides have come to terms on a deal. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal hears that it's a two-year, $21 million deal with an opt-out after the first year. As we've become accustomed to with the Nationals, Janes hears that $5 million will be deferred through 2021.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Nationals are closing in on a deal with free agent catcher Matt Wieters.

Advice: Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that it's a two-year deal. Heyman adds that there's an opt-out involved. After waiting all offseason to find a new home, it turns out Wieters won't have to move very far. It's ultimately not a surprising fit, as the Nationals have a history with Scott Boras clients. The Nationals already acquired Derek Norris earlier this offseason as a replacement for Wilson Ramos, but Wieters still has the potential to deliver more upside with the bat.

Jim Bowden of ESPN.com and SiriusXM reports that free agent catcher Matt Wieters has been meeting with both general managers and owners as he attempts to find a home.

Advice: Bowden notes that progress is being made, but that nothing is final. The Rays have reportedly made a formal offer in recent days, though it might not reach his asking price. The Nationals also continue to be mentioned as a possibility. Wieters' market has been remarkably quiet coming off a year where he hit .243/.302/.409 with 17 home runs and 66 RBI over 124 games. He has also taken a step back behind the plate.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Rays have made a formal offer to free agent catcher Matt Wieters.

Advice: But the offer was "likely for one year," per Topkin, and "certainly for millions of dollars less than what Wieters and agent Scott Boras are seeking." Wieters has struggled to find a contract to his liking in this market after batting .243/.302/.409 with 17 home runs and 66 RBI in 124 games last season for the Orioles. He'd be a fine gamble for a club that doesn't have great options at catcher. We're closing in on the beginning of Grapefruit and Cactus League play.
