Player Notes
Matt Wieters (elbow) will spend the first few days of the regular season at extended spring training.

Advice: He's going to accompany the Orioles to Tropicana Park for their season-opener against the Rays on April 6, but that is only for ceremonial purposes. Wieters will be placed on the 15-day disabled list when camp breaks to give his surgically-repaired right elbow a little more time to heal. The hope is that he'll be ready to rock around April 11.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter confirmed Saturday that Matt Wieters (elbow) is likely to begin the season on the disabled list.

Advice: The Orioles are tentatively targeting a return on April 11, citing this as a precautionary measure rather than a setback in his recovery. With Wieters on the shelf, Caleb Joseph will begin the season as the O's primary backstop with Steve Clevenger serving as his backup.

Matt Wieters (elbow) will not play until Wednesday at the earliest.

Advice: Wieters is dealing with some tendinitis in his surgically-repaired right elbow. The Orioles aren't viewing it as a setback and are still hopeful of him being ready for Opening Day, but he's not going to have much time after getting a late start.

X-rays came back clean on Matt Wieters' right elbow.

Advice: Wieters came down with some tendinitis in his elbow after catching Tuesday for the first time since Tommy John surgery, so the O's sent him for a X-rays as a precautionary measure. No further tests are scheduled. He's still shut down from catching for the next week, but it's good news. Still, his status for Opening Day is in question until he proves that he can catch without discomfort.

Matt Wieters will undergo a precautionary X-ray on his right elbow Thursday.

Advice: Wieters experienced some discomfort in the elbow Tuesday after playing catcher for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery. The hope is that it's just routine tendinitis, but the Orioles want to be sure they know exactly what they're dealing with before they allow the 28-year-old to proceed. O's manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday that Wieters probably won't be on the Opening Day roster if he's unable to start behind the plate.

Matt Wieters has been shut down from catching for a week due to elbow tendinitis.

Advice: Wieters caught Tuesday for the first time since Tommy John surgery and initially said he came out of it fine, but he's dealing with some discomfort. The Orioles are going to back off him for now, but there's a chance he could DH as soon as Sunday. Opening Day hasn't been ruled out for him, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that he probably won't carry him on the roster if he's not ready to catch. Stay tuned.

Matt Wieters (elbow) said he feels good after catching Tuesday for the first time this spring and will catch again Thursday.

Advice: Wieters, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery, caught six innings in his return Tuesday. He's not ready to catch back-to-back games yet, but that should happen soon enough. All signs point to him being behind the plate on Opening Day.
