The Associated Press reports Boston Red Sox SP Jon Lester (shin) left his start Monday, July 21, after being hit on the right shin by a hard one-hopper. He didn't appear injured while watching from the bench. He allowed no runs on eight hits, no walks and struck out six in 7 1/3 innings.

LHP Jon Lester leads the Red Sox staff and is ranks fifth in the AL with 125 innings pitched in what's become a breakout campaign for the 24-year-old southpaw. The Sox point to Lester's ideal size and perfect mechanics as ideal traits for a mound workhorse, but the lefty will get a much need breather around the All-Star break. Lester last started on July 8, and isn't scheduled to start again until July 21 at the Seattle Mariners during Boston's last West Coast trip of the season. That will give Lester an ideal 12 days of rest in between starts after not missing a turn in the rotation during the first half of the season.
