Player Notes
Yadier Molina (oblique) tried to talk his way into the lineup for Game 5 of the NLCS against the Giants on Thursday.

Advice: Molina isn't able to swing a bat, so that pretty much ruled out the possibility. There's a chance he could play as a defensive replacement, but even that might be stretching it. Tony Cruz will start behind the plate in Game 5.

Yadier Molina (oblique) tried to swing the bat on Wednesday, but Cardinals manager Mike Matheny acknowledged that the injured catcher "did not feel good."

Advice: The Cardinals are keeping Yadi active, but he seems doubtful to appear in another NLCS game unless it's to catch Trevor Rosenthal or Carlos Martinez in a save situation. Molina suffered a strained left oblique in the Cardinals' NLCS Game 2 win on Sunday night, and that type of injury often takes 3-4 weeks to recover from. A.J. Pierzynski is starting at catcher for St. Louis in Game 4 on Wednesday.

Yadier Molina (oblique) is expected to get a cortisone shot on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Advice: Molina suffered an oblique strain during Game 2 of the NLCS on Sunday, but he insists that his season is not over. It's too soon to say when he'll play again, as he hasn't resumed swinging a bat, but it looks like it will simply be a matter of how much pain he can tolerate. A.J. Pierzynski is starting behind the plate for Game 3 on Tuesday.

The Cardinals haven't ruled out using Yadier Molina (oblique) as a defensive replacement in Game 3 of the NLCS against the Giants on Tuesday.

Advice: Molina suffered an oblique strain on Sunday and isn't able to swing a bat, but he looked better than expected while playing catch and throwing the ball on Monday. Even if he doesn't play Monday, the Cardinals plan to keep him active in order for him to remain eligible if the club advances to the World Series.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said catcher Yadier Molina (oblique) is "watch and see" and remains day-to-day.

Advice: Matheny also said Molina played catch and was throwing the ball well Monday. On offense, he's still unable to swing a bat. The Cardinals would be best-served to keep him on the active roster for as long as possible, as removing him during the series would also strip him of eligibility for the World Series should they get there. That, like Molina returning to the lineup, is still a ways away at this point. A.J. Pierzynski and Tony Cruz will handle catching duties while Molina is sidelined.

Yadier Molina was on the Cardinals' chartered flight to San Francisco on Monday afternoon.

Advice: But that doesn't really mean much. Molina suffered a strained left oblique muscle Sunday in Game 2 of the NLCS and is likely done for the remainder of the postseason. A.J. Pierzynski and Tony Cruz will fill in at catcher for the Cardinals, who are tied 1-1 with the Giants in the best-of-seven NLCS.

Yadier Molina was forced to leave Game 2 of the NLCS against the Giants on Sunday with a strained left oblique.

Advice: Oblique injuries often take up to four weeks to recover from, and this one looked particularly severe. Molina is one of the more irreplaceable players in the majors, so this is a tough blow to the Cardinals' chances of advancing to the World Series. A.J. Pierzynski and Tony Cruz will fill in at catcher for St. Louis, just as they did when Yadi tore a thumb ligament earlier this summer. The Cardinals went 21-19 during that stretch.

Yadier Molina was forced to leave Game 2 of the NLCS on Sunday in the sixth inning due to an apparent injury.

Advice: Molina appeared to tweak something during a swing in his at-bat in the bottom of the sixth and he was noticeably limping while leaving the field before being replaced by Tony Cruz behind the dish to begin the next frame. The Cardinals should provide an update on his status shortly, but any amount of time that Molina stands to miss is a devastating blow to the Cardinals.
