Big League Stew - MLB

Welcome to what might turn into an ongoing feature here in the Stew. With Barry Bonds currently out of work and teams always looking to improve their lot in MLB, the Shunned One's name will undoubtedly be brought up countless times. So each week until Mr. Bonds catches a fulltime ride, we'll feature a team that might be able to use his services.

The question will always be a simple one: Should your team finally take the plunge and sign the most controversial man in sport?

Our first argument against signing Bonds comes from the incomparable Ian Casselberry, who runs Bless You Boys, a great site for Tigers fans:

Considering how poorly the Tigers were hitting until they seemingly had a breakthrough last night, maybe I should be more receptive to the idea of bringing in Barry Bonds to give Detroit's lineup some extra punch. I'll admit that I'm intrigued by the idea of a left-handed power bat to stick somewhere between the right-handed thunder of Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, and Miguel Cabrera. It's something the Tigers haven't had during their recent rejuvenation.

Bonds would also add some patience at the plate, which is something else the batting order has lacked. His 132 walks and .480 on-base percentage last year would have easily led the Tigers by both categories. (Sheffield drew 84 walks, and Ordonez posted a .434 OBP.) Detroit batters have been remarkably  impatient in taking pitches and working the count this season, often jumping on the first couple of pitches they see. Maybe that impulse is fueled by eagerness to get something going, to do anything to shake the team out of its malaise. Bonds will not swing at a pitch he doesn't think is worthy.  If the pitcher won't put the ball in his strike zone, his bat's not moving.

Rigid plate discipline aside, however, Bonds is too similar to what Detroit already has. One of the flaws highlighted during this losing streak is the lack of speed among Tigers hitters. Without Curtis Granderson, there is no one who can take that extra base, make opposing outfielders rush a throw, or end up on third after hitting a ball into the gap. This lineup moves deliberately from base to base, pushed along by hits.  And if those hits don't come — which they haven't been — runners aren't going anywhere. Bonds wouldn't change that one bit.

He also wouldn't help the Tigers' defense, which is already suffering notably.  The left field territory in Comerica Park isn't kind on immobile outfielders who can't run to the gap. (Actually, it requires another center fielder out there.) Between his creaky knees and vaunted bulk, Bonds just doesn't have the necessary range to cover all that space.  If you want to move him to another position, Detroit already has plenty of guys that are better suited for first base or designated hitter.

Hey, here in Michigan, we'd love to see anyone come here for a job.  We sympathize with anyone currently out of work.  But we could use a lot more hot and fresh than old and busted.

Honestly just sign Bonds. The guy has the records, he can get on base. The downside to this is he has some allegations against him but who doesn't. Coming from a Brewer fan in the NL, we don't need him, but the Tigers should get him. Any team in the AL should get Bonds. He will be on that first base bag more than any other player on your squad. This is like not signing Michael Jordan to a contract because he used to wear springs in his shoes...The man can still shoot the J, play some D, drive to the lane, all without those springs.

That would be sweet but were would he play you would have to get rid of Jones and put sheffield in left and oput bonds at DH. That is the only way it would work. That would be the best and most star studded line of all time, and we don't even have all are pitching back until july. GO TIGERS!!!

so the guy has some baggage, who doesn't. Based on what our elected officials are doing (sex scandals, etc.) Give him a job, if and when he's proven guilty (or not) then decide on what to do. If he wants to play let him. He may have done some improper things, but he has also done some incredible things. Barry is one of the good guys ( I know the allegations) but he still has been a better influence than a bad one.

No way. Bonds is a washed up arrogant boob who would serve as a mediocre DH at best. Plus he is a clubhouse pariah. This team needs a healthy bullpen for the long haul. Go Wings!

I currently live in Detroit, and as a tigers fan, Bonds with a D on his chest is the last thing I want to see. We already have one of the best batting lineups, regardless of the record. Bonds' bat and personality isn't needed and/or wanted in Comerica Park.

Jacque Jones seems to have finally gotten started. He has hit 4 for 11 (.364) in his last 3 games after an 0 for 7 start at the plate. I would give Jones and the rest of the line-up a little more time before making such a controversial move.

If they agree on the numbers, why not sign him? How could it hurt? I doubt if he will run the club house in Detroit, like he did in S.F. Baseball's reputation and records have been tarnished since Mc Guire's run for the single season H.R. record. Bond's just jumped on the steroid band wagon an broke the most hallowed record in baseball. The record was bound to be broken with the following formula:
    Player+Performance Enhancing Drugs+Juiced Ball+Smaller Ball Parks+Selig's ambivalence = BROKEN RECORD

What team in their right mind would sign Bonds? Why disrupt a good clubhouse with a guy like that? Obviously, with spring training long over with and the season two weeks old, if anybody wanted him they would have been knocking on his door a long time ago. He just brings too much baggage with him. He's been indicted by the Feds, has to go to court this year, who needs that disruption on their team. Let him sit at home.

Would be a major mistake that would make the whole topic of the Tigers having 'team chemistry' mean something different. Tigers will come together as a team and do not need the distractions. This lineup is good and even the valued fill ins like Inge and Thames are producing. Need more pitching not someone else to sit on the bench. All winning streaks start with one.

This is the dumbest article I have even seen. Yahoo, this is worse than your "Rumors". I did not even bother reading the article, I just skipped down here to gripe.
The Tigers do NOT need a bat, especially and old, overpriced one with bum knees. Sign pitching. Thankfully Dave Drombowski is a little sharper than the author of the article here.
