The demolition of old Tiger Stadium keeps churning along and, as expected, it's been pulling the heart strings of Michiganders across The Glove State. Looking to document the lasting feelings for the ancient ballpark, Detroit Free Press photographer Eric Seals put together the well-done video-photo presentation of fans watching the destruction below.
The good news is that, as legendary announcer Ernie Harwell wrote in this morning's paper, private parties just raised $400,000 in eight days to delay the destruction of a portion of the stadium until next spring. The eventual goal is to preserve some of the stands while building a neighborhood ballfield and a baseball museum. For an urban area that could use more positive attractions, that seems like an excellent idea.
However, the bad news is that $15.6 million ultimately has to be raised to get the deal done and, last I checked, that's a lot of money (way more than $400K), especially in a bad economony and especially in Detroit.
So, as Harwell notes, keep those donations coming if you don't want to see Tiger Stadium destroyed completely. (Ernie says checks can go to the "Ernie Harwell Foundation, c/o Gary Spicer, Suite 5, 16845 Kercheval, Grosse Pointe, MI 48230.")

I'd really like to see them keep part of the stadium (at least the lower deck between first and third), but I don't think it's gonna happen. Being from the burbs just outside the city, you get to see how bad the "D" is on a regular basis, with their crooked mayor. Even if they use it as a youth field, who is going to keep it up? We all know that the city isn't going to pay for the upkeep! So it will end up like most of the other city fields down there...

I was bantering mindlessly too... Althouth, I was thinking more along the lines of the kind that keep your hands warm... Not used for bashing someone's skull in... :D AND, it's a catcher's mitt, not a catcher's glove. In baseball, gloves do have fingers, mitts however (first baseman as well?) don't have fingers... And here's a dictionary definition... Mitten - a hand covering enclosing the four fingers together and the thumb separately.
More bantering....
