The hits just keep on coming for Tiger Woods in the sponsor department. Just months after it was reported that Nike had cut Woods' pay, Swiss watch-maker Tag Heuer dropped Woods as one of the main faces of the company.
As Golf World executive editor Ron Sirak tweeted,"Tiger's agent confirms Woods' Tag Heuer relationship has expired," Sirak tweeted on Friday.
Tag Heuer had already been working on scaling back Woods' image in advertisements for the last two years, after his admission of marital infidelity. Unlike a few companies that dropped Woods outright, Tag decided to let things play out, while taking heat in the process for not following suit with a number of other sponsors that left Woods' side.
Following Gillette, Gatorade, Accenture, AT&T and Golf Digest, Tag Heuer became the sixth company to leave Woods' stable of major sponsors. Judging from the recent rumors that Woods was running out of money, this is probably the worst news he could get as he enters the final major championship of the year.
With his game still missing and sponsors wondering if he'll ever be the marketing magnet he once was, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Tag let the contract expire. Woods doesn't have near the pull he used to have in the sports marketing world, and unless he can somehow find his game and start winning tournaments again, announcements of new partnerships with Japanese heat rub companies will probably become the norm.
