Roto Arcade - Fantasy

In the timeless words of eighties chart-topper Bryan Adams:

"It cuts like a knife. But it feels so right."

For fantasy owners who stole Baltimore backup Ray Rice in early drafts that's exactly how they're feeling today.

Ravens starter Willis McGahee will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, a "cautionary procedure" described by team doctors. He is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. Since Baltimore's season-opener versus Cincinnati is September 7, McGahee will likely be given the always maddening "questionable" label Week 1.

Surgery is the latest setback in a forgettable training camp for the once self-proclaimed "greatest back in the NFL." Following Shawn Kemp's Guide to Offseason Physical Deterioration, the 26-year-old plowshare, who attended only one mandatory minicamp and another voluntary session, reported to camp out of shape and out of mind. As Ravens running back coach Wilbert Montgomery remarked to the Carroll County Times:

"He's got to learn what we're doing. The offseason program that we implemented here, they can't make it mandatory that you be here, but you need to be here to learn what's going on. Willis wasn't here, so he's playing catch-up. You have to be in great shape in this offense. Right now, he's going to struggle a little bit until he understands what we're asking him to do. If he wasn't the athlete that we all know he is, it would be frustrating. It still is kind of frustrating because we're trying to teach him and it's just not coming as fast as you would like it to, but you know it will come."

According to Yahoo! ADP values, McGahee is currently going around pick 22 (Mock Draft ADP: 16.4) or the 12th running back selected. Based on the worrisome news and given his injury plagued history, he's quickly becoming someone to avoid in the early rounds. At this point, Jamal Lewis (Y! ADP 41.9, MockDraft ADP: 24.8), Michael Turner (59.2, 38.5) and Thomas Jones (85.4, 51.1) are more trustworthy options.

Meanwhile for the white-hot Rice, McGahee's potential Week 1 absence catapults his draft value. The Rutgers product, who's been drafted in only 36 percent of Y! leagues, has greatly impressed onlookers in camp. His bruising running style and laser vision could prove fruitful in a Cam Cameron system where running backs typically flourish (e.g. LaDainian Tomlinson).

Assuming Rice gets the nod Week 1, he should be considered a strong RB2 versus the Bengals. Cincinnati made marginal improvements on defense this past offseason and are expected to be below average against the run again this year (21st in rush D in '07). However, even with a strong performance, head coach John Harbaugh will relegate the youngster to a backup role when McGahee returns:

"Willis is our back, no question."

At this point, Rice, selected on average at pick 183.4 per Mock Draft Central, is someone who must be considered as early as Round 9 in 12-team drafts, especially for anyone who invests an early round pick in McGahee.

Wow, good for you, Antrel R.
I thought the men's 4X100m relay team was impressive, but you really stole the spotlight. Congratulations, champ.

    Get 'em behrens.
Anyway, any chance Rice makes it a platoon or even overtakes McGahee as the starter this year?

Considering Rice's impressive camp and the fact that he's considered a better third down back than McGahee, is there any chance this could develop into a semi- time share? Does he fit into Cameron's system better than McGahee? What's his upside this season in comparison to Julius Jones, Chris Johnson or Ricky Williams? I;m looking for a 4th back, Rice might be the ticket.

I already had dropped him far enough on my draft board that he wouldn't be on any of my teams this year. I'm pretty sure the Baltimore O-line has lost two starters to injury already, and that's not counting Jonathan Ogden's retirement. Then consider that McGahee would be the sole threat on that putrid Baltimore offense -- no defensive coordinator in the NFL is going to respect the Ravens passing attack this year. And now he's reporting to camp overweight, not learning the new system, and having knee surgery?
It all adds up to me spending my second-round pick on a star WR instead. Sorry, Willis. More Bryan Adams is in order:
"Please forgive me; I know not what I do.
Please forgive me; I won't be drafting you."

Rankings: I put Ray Rice in front of andre hall, chris johnson, ricky williams, chester taylor and right b4 deangelo williams. Rice will most likely start week one and he was a stud in college but I know that doesn't matter ex. reggie bush. Any kind of surgery is pretty bad for your running back in fantasy. This is ray rice's chance to take over primary running back duties. Even if McGahee comes back week 2 or 3 he wont be the same, he was out of shape in the offseason and hasnt had continuous practice to be game ready, and ray rice has.

Can someone please give me any rationale for having a fantasy draft this early?? We never draft til the week before the season. Otherwise people get stuck with players who are injured, suspended, or have been passed on the depth chart. Part of the fantasy draft should not be predicting the preseason. No sympathy for anyone who is dumb enough to have their league draft so early.

With Kyle Boller under center; It isn't really gonna matter who is in the backfield. Willis Mcgahee is a decent RB2 (even though I am not drafting him there.) Ray Rice is not better than Willis Mcgahee. I am not saying Rice is gonna be bad, I am saying that the Ravens ARE be bad. The defense is a shell of what it used to be and the running back touches, whether it is Rice or Mcgahee, will be minimal at best as the Ravens scramble to put points on the board late in the game. Dont believe the hype, if I need to count on Ray Rice as my RB2 for the first week, something went terribly wrong in my draft.

Tico: I mock you, too. He shouldn't have gone before round 10, even in a 14-team league. Good drafting doesn't just mean getting good players, it also means getting them at the right time.
As for McGahee, what a tremendous disappointment he became. He never has lived up to his potential, and he could be staring at the end of his career right now.
If only the University of Miami knew how to instill a work ethic instead of a mouth ethic into their players, maybe they'd still be a decent program and their alumni wouldn't be constant letdowns.

Willis was an overrated lazy punk in buffalo, and nothing is going to change that. He only played hard last year because he was with a new team. The ravens will learn what a waste of talent he is.

Oh and I look back now, at Miami he could run for-ev-er.. and if he had the choice, I'm sure that he'd still want-to-be-there.. those were the best days of his life... oh yeah! He'll be back in 2009"

I've done two drafts already, & got "stuck" with McGahee in one of them. I'm also doing two late drafts, both of them on Labor Day weekend.
Big deal. I draft early, because I enjoy drafting. The draft day process is entertaining. I don't take either of my early teams seriously; I leave that for the later teams. I simply have fun drafting two early teams, & if either of them ends up being competitive, all the better.
/shrug It's not like fantasy football is important to me.

In a league that drafted prior to camp, I took Willis as my RB3, and later picked up Rice as a handcuff. I now wish I had read up a little more on Willis' struggles/laziness before making such an investment. But, with any luck, he'll be in street clothes by fantasy playoff time and I'll have Rice rolling up yardage in my flex.

However, it's a shame that someone we invested a first round pick in 5 years ago, someone who we latched our hopes onto, who we were patient with through his rehab, would disrespect the franchise and city that believed in him. But hey, sports today are a business. How could we expect any type of loyalty or respect from a guy who goes around fathering children like it's going out of style? Once a scumbag, always a scumbag. Peace out, Willis! See you on the Toronto Argaunauts in 2009!

He came back from that horrible college bowl injury. Put it this way, i didnt think he would do anything in the nfl after that injury. So he is at the end of his career. If he didnt get hurt in the bowl game you would be drafting him top 5.
