Trevor Plouffe gets ball stuck in his glove after diving stop

Minnesota Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe has made his share of amazing defensive plays in 2013. Just a couple weeks ago, he was featured in this very space after a head over heels grab at Kauffman Stadium. But the predicament he found himself in Monday was not something he could have ever predicted.

During the second inning of a game against the New York Mets, center fielder Juan Lagares hit a hard grounder to Plouffe — who was playing up. Plouffe made a diving stop to keep the ball in the infield. But there was one problem: the ball was stuck in the webbing of his glove! Lagares was safe at first (and would eventually score on an Eric Young Jr. RBI in a game the Mets went on to win 6-1.)

Meanwhile in preseason NFL action, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Redskins both lost players to foot injuries during their game Monday night. Robert Griffin III's backup, Kirk Cousins, left with what was called a mid-foot sprain while Steelers running back Le'veon Bell also departed early.

Finally, Maria Sharapova wants to be called Maria Sugarpova — at least for a couple weeks. The tennis star has approached the Florida Supreme Court about the possible name change as a publicity stunt to promote her candy company.
