Just when you think it can't get worse for the New York Knicks, it does. First, let's recap what has been an eventful week-plus. There was Carmelo Anthony not realizing his team was playing a back-to-back and cursed on live TV. Then, Amar'e Stoudemire — who is out approximately two weeks with a sprained left ankle — threw a pass that knocked over the drink of a woman sitting courtside. Those events were followed by 'Melo shaking his head from the bench at his team's lack of defense and Tyson Chandler calling out head coach Mike Woodson's scheme for said lack of defense. And we haven't even brought up J.R. Smith.
That brings us to Wednesday night's home game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Down 79-74 in the third quarter, Andrea Bargnani (reinserted into the starting lineup after coming off the bench Monday in a loss to Brooklyn) thought he was Michael Jordan. Instead of shooting a wide-open three from the top of the arc, the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft decided to drive to the bucket instead. One problem: the 7-footer isn't known for explosiveness at the rim. His dunk attempt failed miserably. Thankfully, he was OK. But the embarrassing moment speaks for itself.
Philly won 110-106, sending New York to its fifth straight loss.

Moving to the Australian Open, Li Na knocked off Canadian phenom Eugenie Bouchard 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals to advance to her third straight final.

And in the NHL, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury and Montreal Canadiens netminder Peter Budaj nearly came to blows during a 5-1 Pens victory.
