Five theories why Cristiano Ronaldo threw a reporter's mic into a pond

Cristiano Ronaldo hasn't dropped the mic, exactly. That would be the wrong way to describe this.

No, he's tossed the mic.

Into a pond.

Let's set the scene. Portugal was on its pre-match stroll before the crucial group stage final against Hungary. The team was surrounded by hordes of people, for some reason. Then, an enterprising reporter stepped up to Ronaldo to ask him a question while live on the air.

Ronaldo, like anyone would, wrested the mic from him and dumped it into the adjacent pond with an elegant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-patented sky hook.

Splash. (Get it?)

Why exactly he decided to christen that microphone is unclear. Speculations range from his trouble converting penalty and free kicks to a beef with a newspaper to a general lack of sleep and ensuing crankiness.

We have a few theories of our own:

1. A global shortage on bronzer has broken out.

2. There is now a rule against stripping down to your underwear in post-game locker room team pictures.

3. His teeth-whitening guy is retiring.

4. His son has decided he wants to be a goalkeeper.

5. He was just shown Lionel Messi's free kick goal against the United States.

In the game itself, Ronaldo did drop the proverbial mic by scoring twice in the second half – and once with a stupendous heel-flick – to rescue a 3-3 tie and see the Portuguese into the Round of 16.

He was still cranky, though.
