Former beetroot factory worker Rickie Lambert scores winner against Scotland on England debut

For the first time in 14 years, England faced their fountain-ruining rivals Scotland on Wednesday evening in a "friendly" at Wembley stadium.

The Three Lions are often accused of a lack of effort, particularly in friendly matches, but from the outset, it was clear that this was a game both sides really wanted to win. Despite falling behind twice, Roy Hodgson's side ended up 3-2 victors, thanks to a winner from Rickie Lambert (and thanks to the Scotland defenders who didn't bother mark him).

Not so long ago, Lambert was earning £20 a day screwing lids onto jars at a beetroot factory. At the age of 31, the Southampton striker was given an unlikely debut, coming on in the 67th minute for (a very rusty but uninjured) Wayne Rooney. Two minutes later he scored the winner, and could have put away two more had the post and Scotland keeper Allan McGregor not intervened.

Lambert — who also scored minutes into his Premier League debut — wasn't even aware he had earned his first England call-up last week, only finding out while checking his phone after being at his wife's side while she gave birth to their third child.

It's a wonderful story for a man who has had an unconventional route to the top, and proof that picking players in form rather than big names is a virtuous approach. Hopefully, he won't join David Nugent and Francis Jeffers in becoming an England player with only one cap and one goal.

Elsewhere in the match, James Morrison opened the scoring while Joe Hart was caught daydreaming about shampoo, Theo Walcott finished beautifully for his first England goal at Wembley, Vancouver Whitecaps forward Kenny Miller scored a brilliant second goal and Danny Welbeck connected with a Steven Gerrard free kick.
