Jarome Iginla gets his security, signs three-year, $16 million contract with Avalanche
Jarome Iginla has now further cemented his role as a hockey nomad at this point in career after signing with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday, the same day he turned 37 years old.
Iginla finished last season scoring 30 goals and posting 61 points with the Boston Bruins. When the two sides went to talk extension this summer, the Bruins' bonus penalty overage and the Iginla's insistence of a multi-year deal were the hiccups that prevented a deal from getting done. He'll now get a three-year deal worth $16 million, according to TSN.
“On one hand it was very, very difficult. It’s a great organization,” he told TSN. “But on the other, it wasn’t. There really wasn’t an opportunity there because of the cap. We tried to get something to work. Even if they could squeeze me in at one year, they couldn’t bring me back the next year because of the guys [whose contracts are up].”
Danny Briere on Monday. Now Iginla. Joe Sakic really felt like he needed some veteran experience in that room, which is full of plenty of young stars.
“I think they’re a great young team," he said. "Very dynamic.”
It was a blow to lose Paul Stastny earlier in the day, but with the right linemates, Iginla has shown he can still produce at his age. A Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon and Iginla line might put up a couple of points or two.
