(Ed. Note: To determine the top 10 hockey fights of 2014, we turned to an expert on the matter. David Singer is the founder and editor of HockeyFights.com and has put together this list of the 10 best brawls of the year from every level of hockey. Or, more to the point: The Antoine Roussel Show. Enjoy!)
By David Singer
10. Damir Ryspayev vs Alexander Svitov
Barys Astana at Ak Bars Kazan, Nov 24, 2014
Long bout from Russia. Now they’re fighting exchange rates.
9. Nik Amundrud vs Jake Morrissey
Saskatoon Blades at Kelowna Rockets, Dec 3, 2014
Mandatory goalie fight.
8. Jake Marchment vs Joshua Chapman
Belleville Bulls at Sarnia Sting, Oct 24, 2014
Marchment had to really skate to catch up wot Chapman before the fists fly, then the visor, then the helmets. These two kept going until David Branch got on the OHL bat phone to have it broken up.
7. Antoine Roussel vs Andrew Shaw
Dallas Stars at Chicago Blackhawks, Nov 16, 2014
With a combined weight of Dustin Byfuglien, these two threw enthusiastically. Shaw doesn’t have 10 fights in the NHL, but he has fought Roussel twice.
6. Kyle Hagel vs Joel Rechlicz
Charlotte Checkers at Iowa Wild, Oct 24, 2014
Wild, then methodical, then Hagel basically taps out, as would most.
5. Scott Cooke vs Tanner LeSann
Moose Jaw Warriors at Swift Current Broncos, Sep 19, 2014
Tanner LeSann has been a highlight machine for a couple of years now. He adds to his card with this fight against Cooke, which keeps going, even as the linesmen move in.
Toronto Maple Leafs at Washington Capitals, Jan 10, 2014
Colton Orr played in the NHL in the calendar year of 2014. We have proof. He also took a good number of punches from the underrated John Erskine, who’s had Orr’s number in each of their three fights.
3. Jay Rosehill vs Mark Fraser
Lehigh Valley Phantoms at Albany Devils, Nov 28, 2014
Just an old-fashioned heavyweight brawl.
2. Josh Thrower vs Tyrell Goulbourne
Tri-City Americans at Kelowna Rockets, Mar 28, 2014
Toe-to-toe with right after right. The Flyers drafted Goulbourne. You’re shocked, I know. The diminutive Goulbourne took on Tom Wilson in an NHL rookie game in 2013, and was the one who knocked down 6’5” Joe Mahon last year, too.
1. Antoine Roussel vs Kevin Klein
Dallas Stars at Nashville Predators, Jan 20, 2014
Roussel’s turned into a decent scrapper, but Klein? Who knew? After a scrum Klein throws the right, Roussel the left and it’s just punch after punch, visors be damned. Eric Nystrom was on the ice and called it a 10, who am I to argue?
