Nashville Predators nearing two-year deal with Mike Fisher: Report

The Nashville Predators appear to be closing in on re-signing forward Mike Fisher. As if he would really ever leave Nashville on his own terms.

Tweeted The Tennessean’s Adam Vingan:

Earlier in the summer, Predators general manager David Poile told reporters “As long as I'm the manager, he can play as long as he wants."

And why would Fisher want to leave Nashville? His wife lives there. He got traded there pretty much specifically to be closer to his wife.

He gets to go to cool events and look handsome in front of everyone.

He’s coming off a contract for two years at $8.4 million. He’s not a legit first line center and never has been throughout his career. But if he can get a similar deal for a similar term, even at the age of 35 for the start of next year, it makes sense for both sides.

Said ESPN's Pierre LeBrun:

My sense is both sides are in agreement on term -- a two-year deal makes sense for the 35-year-old -- but just how much money should be doled out remains an issue.

His .66 points per-game was the fourth-best of his career. He had 39 points in 59 games after rupturing his Achilles in the offseason. He won 52.3 percent of his face offs. On the NHL’s enhanced stat site he was plus-70 on his shot attempts differential – but a lot of his situations are more defensive than offensive.

Said On The Forecheck:

He's a vital piece on the ice and in the locker room, and was one of the few bright spots on a season full of special team woes. He'd be able to slot in on the third line in the near future (with stints on the second when needed), while being the wise veteran to Nashville's influx of young talent coming in the next few years.

I’d take Mike Fisher on my third line – even at age 35, for two more years. Now Mike Ribeiro, another pending Nashville UFA, is another story completely …
