Finnish defenseman sets Liiga record with 44-second hat trick (Video)

Lahti Pelicans defenseman Juha Leimu made history on Tuesday by recording the fastest hat trick in Finnish Liiga history. Leimu tallied a natural hat trick in 44 seconds during a 6-5 loss to JYP.

Pelicans was helped by the fact they were on a 5-on-3 advantage the entire time. They actually scored four times in the final 1:50 of the second period thanks to a pair of game misconduct penalties giving them all that power play time.

Leimu, who was sporting the gold helmet as the team’s leading scorer, breaks the record set by Erkki Suokko, who notched a hat trick in 50 seconds back in 1961.
