A week ago, Brian Gibbons was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins as their season came to an end at the hands of the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. On Wednesday, he was part of the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins as they advanced to the Eastern Conference Final over the Providence Bruins.

Despite their still being plenty of hockey left in 2014, Gibbons likely sealed the "Goal of the Year" race with this stunning tally during the Penguins' 5-4 victory:

Talk about doing it yourself. Win the face-off, then dangle through the entire team as you both play 4-on-4, make sure you don't go off-side and then pot a goal. It will be real hard to top this individual effort.

Gibbons' goal gave the Penguins a 4-0 second period lead. They would make it 5-0 a few minutes later and then have to hang on as the Bruins clawed back with four goals, but eventually fell just short

It's the second straight year Wilkes-Barre has knocked out Providence. A year ago Thursday, the Penguins became only the third AHL team to come back from a 3-0 series deficit. They now move on to face the St. John's IceCaps for a chance to play for the Calder Cup.
