Audio stunt helps Stars to 'Nickel Comeback' against Canucks (Video)

Call it the “Nickel Comeback.”

That’s how Dallas Stars senior director of game presentation Jason Danby described his team’s 4-3 home overtime win over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.

During the second period at American Airlines Arena, the Stars played music by the band Nickelback during almost every stoppage as a way to make fun of the Canucks. The band, which elicits strong emotions from music lovers, is from British Columbia. This gave a perfect opportunity for the Stars to needle their opponents.

Dallas has used its jumbotron to make fun of the Maple Leafs for having Justin Bieber as a fan. The Stars have also trolled the city of Winnipeg for its cold weather reputation.

This was its first known audible troll that went viral. The hilarious video is above.

“Most of the time we target the other team or the other team’s fan base and we actually have a strict set of rules kind of where we will and where we won’t go, but there are kind of these peculiar nooks that we can exploit so with Vancouver and Nickelback, we just wanted to celebrate, I guess, the progress that we’ve all made as a culture by reminding people what music was like 10 years ago. It was more of a celebration than anything,” said Danby, who quickly added he was kidding … at least about the musical progress line.

The bit was actually part of an in-game "contest" the Stars do with their DJ Michael Gruber, called “Killin' it with Grubes.” The Stars ask their fans which song they never want to hear again, which stokes the passions of the crowd.

“We have a fake number. People aren’t actually texting and voting. The totals don’t add up at the end, but the choices were all Nickelback. So we played it at nearly every stoppage for a period and I think the teams caught on because we were waiting for our under 10 minute TV timeout and we got under the six-minute mark. I think the teams noticed every time there was a stoppage we played Nickelback. So it was like a running clock for five or seven minutes,” Danby said.

Of course the Stars ran the risk of upsetting their players – since a lot of hockey players like Nickelback. Team captain Jamie Benn is from Victoria, British Columbia.

But Danby said Benn, who scored the OT winner against the Canucks, doesn’t seem to be a Nickelback fan.

“There was not really that much worry,” Danby said. “From what I’ve heard of Jamie Benn’s musical choice and music that we get requested for warm ups, I don’t think he’s ever requested Nickelback, so I took that as probably just a sign of confidence in what we could pull off. I certainly don’t want to offend Nickelback fans, if there are any left.”

He noted that the entertainment choice stoked the crowd’s fires, which could have helped the comeback. Hence the "Nickel Comeback" line.

Said Danby, “If everyone else gets mad, just stand by, your moment is coming. We have some Lamb of God for our metal heads coming and Taylor Swift in a highlight video for the younger female demographic, so the goal is to let everyone have their moment.”
