Malik Simmons might have been able to participate in the start of fall camp for North Carolina, but the formerly suspended defensive back didn’t exactly escape further punishment.

Coach Larry Fedora announced Friday that Simmons would miss the first two games of the season as continued punishment for two arrests during the offseason.

“Malik’s actions did not meet the standards of the Carolina football program and he will serve a significant penalty as a result,” Fedora said in a statement. “I’m confident he will learn from it and we can put these issues in the past.”

Simmons was cited in May for possession of marijuana and then arrested on July 24 and charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest. Police said Simmons, 21, was under the influence when he was arrested. He was indefinitely suspended for roughly a week.

He was supposed to be in court for hearing on Monday, but instead was taking part in the first day of training camp.

Simmons played in 12 games last season and had 34 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and three pass breakups.
