Steve Spurrier isn’t a fan of suspensions for underage drinking

Another year, another South Carolina quarterback having trouble with alcohol.

Last week, backup Tanner McEvoy was arrested in North Carolina and charged with speeding and underage drinking.

Coach Steve Spurrier suspended McEvoy, per team policy, but the suspension didn't last long — less than a week to be exact.

Spurrier isn't new to alcohol-related issues with his quarterbacks. Former starter Stephen Garcia had multiple suspensions because of alcohol-related incidents before he was ultimately dismissed from the team.

But maybe it isn't the quarterbacks, maybe it's coach Spurrier's attitude regarding drinking, specifically underage drinking.

"You want him suspended for having a beer and he's underage?" Spurrier told The Post and Courier regarding McEvoy. "How many football players would be playing if they had a beer and they were underage?"

While what Spurrier says is true — true of almost all underage college students (and even some high schoolers) — it's still not something you say out loud even if you're known for saying inappropriate stuff out loud. The quote makes it sound like Spurrier condones underage drinking, and perhaps he does, but again, don't tell people that because it's illegal.

Ah, Spurrier, always good for a quip, but sometimes, he'd be better off not saying anything at all.
