South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier takes shots at Texas A&M's schedule
Texas A&M’s scheduling seems to be the hot topic as we head into the 2014 season.
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was the latest person to take a jab at the Aggies, whom the Gamecocks play to open the season. And while Texas A&M has won 20 games in the past two years, Spurrier was quick to point out that few of those games have come against the best teams in college football.
“They haven’t played the bigger teams so their schedule has been a little misleading,” Spurrier told the Columbia Touchdown Club on Wednesday.
Spurrier even went as far as to say the Aggies 2013 nonconference schedule, which consisted of Rice, Sam Houston State, SMU and UTEP was “barely Division I.”
In July, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops put Texas A&M’s schedule into the limelight by mocking the fact that its 2014 nonconference campaign included Lamar, Rice, SMU and Louisiana-Monroe.
“Boy, that’s a bunch of toughies,” Stoops told ESPN.com.
But to be fair, A&M also has to play at Alabama and at Auburn this season.
Spurrier also felt the need to take a shot at the now-defunct rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M, stating that South Carolina and Clemson would never stop playing simply because one left for another conference.
“I find it interesting that they quit playing Texas,” Spurrier said. “They played Texas 115 years like we have played Clemson and then they left that Big 12 conference and both schools got mad at each other and said, ‘We aren’t going to play you anymore.’ It would be like us and Clemson saying we are not playing anymore. Our whole state would go crazy. The governor would get involved in that.”
