The Waldo Canyon fire, one of the many Colorado wildfires spreading across the state thanks to high temps, dry conditions and high winds, has encroached on Air Force's football stadium.
From the picture above by Patrick Sandusky, the chief communications and public affairs officer at the U.S. Olympic Committee, via his Twitter account, that's Falcon Stadium in the foreground. And you can see how the fire on the mountains behind absolutely dwarfs the stadium, which seats just under 47,000. As of Tuesday night, the fire was reported to be within a mile of the Air Force Academy grounds. A spokesman for the academy said that the two housing areas on the base had been evacuated and the academy was monitoring the fire closely. The Colorado Springs Fire Chief said the fire was one "of epic proportions."
On Wednesday, Air Force sent out a release saying that all athletic events would be canceled until further notice because of the fire.
The picture is eerily reminiscent of the video of the Tuscaloosa tornado behind Bryant-Denny Stadium on April 27, 2011. Because of the fires, more than 32,000 people had been evacuated from their homes.
