Fomer Cal QB Zach Kline is back with Bears as a walk on

Zach Kline is competing for the starting quarterback job at Cal. Again.

Kline, who was Jared Goff's backup for the 2013 season, transferred out of the program following six appearances that season. He was initially reported to go to Oregon State but instead transferred to Butte College, a two-year school.

He played for Butte for a season and then transferred to Indiana State for the 2015 season. He played three games for ISU in 2015 and came back to Cal in December to finish his degree.

Now he's walking on to the team and will participate in spring practice.

"I said, 'I want to make sure we manage expectations,' for him and for everybody," Cal coach Sonny Dykes said via BearTerritory.com. "Zach's a great kid, a very hard-working kid, a popular rkid. I met with him, I asked him to meet with Damon Harrington, because he has a real good feel for what's going on with the team, and he met with Damon and then Damon gave me the OK. At that point, I said, 'Yeah, I'd love to have you back.' He'll go through spring ball, and we'll see what happens."

Kline came to Cal as a four-star recruit in the class of 2013. Dykes was non-committal when asked if Kline would be a member of the team in the fall, but it would certainly make for one hell of a story if Goff's successor was the man who backed him up three years ago and subsequently played at two different schools over the following two seasons.

"Zach handled the first time here really with a lot of maturity, and it didn't go the way he wanted, and I was really proud with the way he handled it," Dykes said. "That's tough when you're a young guy. He wants to come back, be a part of this team, graduate with the guys he came in with. I was happy that he decided to come back."
