Donovan McNabb says that Syracuse will retire his number

Donovan McNabb didn't win a Heisman Trophy at Syracuse, or lift the Orange to a national title. But it's hard to argue that his No. 5 isn't worthy of retirement.

McNabb announced on his Twitter account that Syracuse is planning to give him that honor this season:

There's sometimes a rush to retire numbers before a player's legacy can really be digested, but McNabb seems worthy.

Since Floyd Little and Larry Csonka decades ago, McNabb is probably the player who is most closely associated with Syracuse football. He won three Big East player of the year awards during his four years as starter. He also played parts of two seasons with the Syracuse basketball team, including one that ended at the Final Four, which added to his legend. He went on to be a longtime star with the Philadelphia Eagles.

McNabb is a borderline Pro Football Hall of Fame candidate, but he knows he'll be immortalized at Syracuse at least.
