Baylor names quarterback scholarship after Robert Griffin III

Robert Griffin III’s legacy at Baylor will always be remembered, but now one lucky quarterback will be awarded a scholarship that bears the famous quarterback’s name.

Baylor President Ken Starr and Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin) announced Tuesday that it was establishing the Robert Griffin III (RG3) Quarterback Scholarship.

“The Robert Griffin III (RG3) Quarterback Scholarship at Baylor University will be awarded to a standout quarterback on the Baylor Football team,” Watson said during his proclamation. “Bearing the name of Mr. Griffin, the scholarship will serve as a reminder to the recipient to exhibit the characteristics of a true leader and representative of Baylor University.”

That’s a pretty special honor for a player that’s only been away from the university for a year. But Griffin did help transform the football culture at Baylor. He was Baylor’s all-time career leader in 14 statistical categories and won the Heisman Trophy. He also led the Bears to their first bowl win since 1992.

He finished his bachelor’s degree in political science in 2010 and was working on his master’s degree when the Washington Redskins drafted him in the first round.

Even though he’s been a huge success in the NFL, Griffin hasn’t forgotten his roots. He often comes back to campus to support Baylor athletics, including the men’s and women’s basketball teams this past winter.
