Northwestern coach Chris Collins surprises walk-on guard with scholarship

Northwestern guard James Montgomery's reward for making a good impression on his new head coach was more than he ever expected.

Chris Collins announced to the team before practice on Thursday that he was awarding the 6-foot-4 walk-on with a scholarship.

Video of Montgomery learning he'd be on scholarship this season became available on Tuesday afternoon when Northwestern released it on YouTube. The best part of the clip actually comes at the end when Montgomery shares the news with his mother and sister, both of whom are clearly overwhelmed with joy.

Montgomery, a native of Santa Monica, Calif., has spent the past two seasons with the Northwestern basketball program, appearing in 33 total games and scoring a combined 17 points during that time. The Santa Monica, Calif. native is a mechanical engineering major.
